Home/ domestic accidents are inevitable, sometimes due to unpreparedness or unsafe acts; some can be detected while some may not. In all of these things there is need to be ready and prepared for any unforeseen situation and at any time of the day, this will help to reduce the possible risk to the minimum.
We will be looking at five major household safety equipment that should be found in every home. if your home is really safe, you should have at least four of these, if you don’t have up to four of these equipment’s then you need to re-evaluate the value of your home to you.
- Fire Extinguisher: Having a fire extinguisher in your house could mean a matter of life and death or it could simply save your home from getting burnt down or seriously damaged. On a daily basis, we engage in activities that may trigger fire accidents, everyday someone cooks in the house, there may be a smoker in the house and even electrical appliances may lead to a fire outbreak. There is great need to have a fire extinguisher in every house mounted on the wall at strategic locations for easy access. Do not mount it over the stove. Do not store it in a cabinet or closet. Anyone should be able to spot it easily.
- First aid box: Having an Emergency first aid kitin the home is not an option but a necessity that every home should strive to have. It is important because it helps to treat injuries that may occur at home before taken to the hospital for further evaluation.First aid kits will help in reducing infection risks and even the severity of an injury. Basically, the first aid kit covers for every kind of emergency you will encounter at home, it’s a must have for every home.
- FIRE BLANKET: A fire blanket is a safety device designed to extinguish incipient (starting) fires. It consists of a sheet of a fire-retardant material which is placed over a fire in order to smother it.It is a highly flame-resistant blanket that can be used to extinguish a small fire or to wrap around a person in case of a fire. Fire blankets are made from 2 layers of woven glass fibre fabric and an inner layer of fire retardant film. They work by cutting off the oxygen supply to the fire.
4.Fire Alarm system/Smoke Dectector: A fire alarm system has a number of devices working together to detect and alert people through visual and audio appliances when smoke, fire, carbon monoxide or other emergencies are present. A smoke detector is a device that senses smoke, typically as an indicator of fire. Smoke can be detected either optically (photoelectric) or by physical process (ionization), detectors may use either, or both, methods. Alarms can be either motorized bells or wall mountable sounders or horns. With this in your house there is a high possibility that incase there is a fire outbreak, people will be alerted, thereby saving lives and properties due to early prevention.
- Emergency numbers: During an emergency, it’s easy to become disoriented and upset, so you need to have all important phone numbers readily available ahead of time, if possible make it boldly written and hung to the wall so that everyone can see and if you still have little kids that are unable to read, train them for emergencies.
